Upgrading Forensic Pathology Services in Jamaica

The Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) is deeply concerned about the high rate of violence in the society resulting in a very high incidence of avoidable deaths and the need for regular forensic and medico-legal post-mortem.

Regretfully only four Forensic Pathologists are employed in Jamaica and we laud this small group of hard working professionals who have extended themselves beyond the call of duty to deal with this crisis.

We are aware that these doctors are operating in less than desirable working conditions, and have an extremely high work load which causes unavoidable delays in performing postmortems and in bringing closure to many medical causes.

The average Forensic Pathologist should ideally have a case load of 3 per week but is now required to do 12 - 15 cases per session, a most unacceptable situation.
